Did you know that the air quality in our home is more polluted than the air outside? It’s true and there are MANY things we can do to turn that around.
Can you guess what the #1 air pollutant in homes is? Fabric Softener! I remember a day when I absolutely loved the smell of fabric softener. However, over the years as learned more and more about using doTerra essential oils I learned how bad the chemicals in those softeners really were.
These chemicals are toxic….leading to cancer, respiratory problems, central nervous system disorders, auto immune issues and more.
You have a choice and honestly, it works better then traditional softeners! My favorite Fabric Softener is white vinegar with some essential oils added in.
Here is my favorite recipe:
- 16 oz White Vinegar
- 3 drops Lime Oil
- 3 drops Grapefruit Oil
- 3 drops Wild Orange Oil
- Citrus peels (optional)
Place 1/2 of the vinegar in your container and add the essential oils and the optional peels. Shake well. Add the rest of the vinegar and allow to sit for 1 week before using. See below how to add it to your laundry.
The application of this recipe will depend on your washer. You have three options: One, during the final rinse cycle, manually add the vinegar mixture (top loading washers only). Two, if your washer has one, add it to the fabric softener cup and it will dispense at the right time. Three, if your washer doesn’t have a fabric softener cup, add the mixture into a fabric softener ball and put it in with your clothes at the beginning.
Depending on the size of your load, you can use anywhere from two tablespoons up to ¼ cup at a time. If your water is harder, you may need to use more. A good rule of thumb? Your laundry should not smell like vinegar when done, if it does, you’ve used too much.
